Welcome to the

Rancho Bodega Historical Society

About Us...

The Rancho Bodega Historical Society (RBHS) has as its goal the discovery, preservation, and dissemination of historical information and artifacts that generate interest about our past.  Our region of interest parallels that of the 35,488-acre land area originally deeded to Capt. Stephen Smith by the Mexican Government in 1844 -- stretching from Estero Americano to the Russian River.  Today, we know this as the roughly 55-square-mile area stretching from the Marin-Sonoma county line near the town of Bodega, through Bodega Bay and further up the coast to Jenner-by-the-sea, where the Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean.

To reflect the diverse interest of members, we strive to balance our programming within  four broad categories -- Native American history, the Mexican, Spanish, and Russian periods, settling by American pioneers, and current topics of interest.  We do this through the newsletter, speaker events, and in collaboration with other local and regional groups.  For basic research, the Society houses a limited collection of books about Sonoma County history and also offers for sale a number of brochures and booklets that describe local history and events.

NOTE: 10 prominent area artists provide support for this web site.  They are gifted individuals with a passion for creating the unusual in art and craft.  This started with the Salmon Creek Artwalk* organizers and quickly spread to guest artists who participate in that annual event.  These generous people can be found in the sections covering Speaking Events, Community Dates, and RBHS Newsletter.  (*identified with pink outline)
